Family Photo Sessions in Summer


Summer family photo sessions mean warm sunsets, blooming gardens, and longer evenings inviting connection. The right wardrobe choices help bring it all together.


But - “What should we wear?” The good news is you do not need perfectly matching outfits or new wardrobe. The goal is to create a look that feels natural.


Start With Mom’s Outfit First

I'm not kidding. You are the coordinator of your loving family chaos. The easiest way to build cohesive family styling start with mom’s outfit. Choose something that feels comfortable, and flattering — because when mom feels confident, the images will show it.


For summer sessions, soft dresses photograph especially adding movement and texture. Midi and maxi dresses in lightweight fabrics like linen, cotton, gauze, or chiffon create a great look.


Some favorite summer tones include:

  • Soft whites and creams
  • Sage green
  • Dusty blue
  • Warm neutrals
  • Soft blush
  • Muted terracotta
  • Pale lavender
  • Light denim tones


Coordinate — Don’t Match

Gone are the days of everyone wearing identical white shirts and jeans. Instead, think of your family’s wardrobe as a coordinated color palette.


Choose 3–4 complementary colors and mix them throughout everyone’s outfits. This creates visual balance while still allowing each person’s personality to shine through. I did that with the image in the beginning of the post. Notice how we start with mom's patterned dress and have everyone's colors and style go from there. Daughter's dress has some texture. Son's shirt brings in the green. Dad has the subtle green in his pants, looking casual yet leveled up with the belt.

  • Keep the rest in coordinating solids or soft textures
  • Avoid loud graphics, large logos, neon colors, or overly busy prints

Small florals, delicate stripes, and subtle gingham patterns often photograph beautifully in summer sessions.

Choose breathable fabrics and avoid anything itchy, stiff, or overly restrictive. Younger children especially tend to do better in outfits they can comfortably run, play, and cuddle in.


For little girls:

  • Eyelet detail or light linen fabric dresses

For boys:

  • Khaki shorts or lightweight pants


Avoid These Missteps

  • Matching everyone too exactly
  • Very dark clothing in harsh summer heat

Don’t Forget the Details

  • Neutral shoes or sandals
  • If getting a fresh manicure, get neutral tones
  • Simple jewelry

  • Wrinkle-free clothing
  • Check your pockets for that phone. We don't want dad sitting on his or for the outline to stick out in mom's dress with the fun pockets.


And most importantly — plan ahead. Trying on outfits together before session day removes stress and helps everything feel more relaxed. The most beautiful family photographs are not about perfectly styled clothing — they are about connection. Your wardrobe should support the session, not overpower it.
